How to use foam rolling and massage to relieve pain and release muscle tension.

The act of using foam rollers and massage balls \ sticks is called SMR (self myofascial release). It refers to using tools to self massage in order to relieve localized areas of pain. Our bodies are held together by connective tissue called fascia. For those of you who have ever trimmed a piece of meat before cooking, it is similar to what is called silver skin.

When you use a foam roller it massages and stretches this tissue as well as your muscles. When using foam rollers and other tools correctly you are bringing oxygenated blood to the areas you are massaging which promotes healing and faster recovery if you do it post workout. Another great benefit is that the motion of the tool can help break down scar tissue from past injuries allowing the body to try and repair and regenerate the damage. I do not allow my clients to begin or end their sessions without a massage period.

It can mean the difference between experiencing intense muscle pain later and feeling great and looking forward to their next session with me.
